ROH Breakout Review

A Steel Cage Match for the World Title Headlines Ring of Honor's Return to Dayton, Ohio

ROH Breakout
Dayton, Ohio 1/25/08

1.) The Briscoes vs. Jigsaw & Matt Cross: **3/4

So the story here is that both Jack Evans & Ruckus are unable to compete, so Matt Cross (who's sporting a nice beard if I remember correctly...) is here to team with Jigsaw for the night. This was a fairly good opener. Nice way to start the show.

2.) Adam Pearce (with Shane Hagadorn) vs. Claudio Castagnoli: **1/2

Hm....I don't know why but I find this to be a very odd encounter. It was still fairly decent though. Nothing spectacular. Peace looses like any arrogant heel should....via his own arrogance.

3.) FIP World Title - Erick Stevens vs. Davey Richards vs. Austin Aries: ***1/4

This was a match that I was looking forward to watching, as you have Richards representing the NRC, while Aries & Stevens are on their own following the dissolution of the Resilience. It wasn't a show-stealing match, but for being third on the card I'd still say it was a pretty good Three Way Title Match.

4.) No DQ - The Hangman 3 (BJ Whitmer & Brent Albright with Shane Hagadorn) vs. El Generico & Delirious: ***1/2

Another match that I was looking forward to. This was actually pretty good. I can't recall anytime (ever) that Delirious & El Generico have teamed together (outside of Six Man Tags of course). They actually make a pretty good team. This match was a lot of fun to watch. A wild brawl that went all over the building.

The Age of the Fall come out and attempt to reach out to Austin Aries again to join, but Daizee Haze comes out & makes fun of Jimmy Jacobs, leading to...

5.) Lacey (with Jimmy Jacobs & Allison Wonderland) vs. Daizee Haze: **

Here we got a decent women's match. And....not much else to say.

After the match, The Age of the Fall surround Daizee Haze, leading to the Briscoes coming out for the save. Joey Matthews then comes out and reveals himself as the Age of the Fall's newest member by attacking the Briscoes with a chair. Matthews said he has defeated his demons and is making a comeback....all thanks to Jimmy Jacobs. This leads us to...

6.) The No Remorse Corps. (Roderick Strong & Rocky Romero) vs. The Age of the Fall (Jimmy Jacobs & Joey Matthews with Tyler Black): ***

You know, I'm not quite sure I understand the reasoning here. You just had Joey Matthews make his debut, and he (along with Jimmy Jacobs, who has momentum) go on to lose to the NRC, who really haven't doing much in the past few months. Doesn't make much sense. The match was still decent.

7.) Bryan Danielson vs. Tyler Black: ****1/4

This is the first in a series of matches that Black & Danielson would have over the years. It was pretty awesome. Black really shined in this one, probably his Breakout performance. He & Danielson put on a great match.

8.) ROH World Title - Steel Cage - Nigel McGuinness vs. Chris Hero (with Sweet 'n' Sour Inc.): ****

This is the culmination of a nearly One Year sort-of-and-off feud between Nigel McGuinness & Chris Hero. The match was pretty good to be honest. For all the goofiness Chris Hero had been pulling up to this point as a member of Sweet 'n' Sour Inc., he was able to put on a great cage match here with Nigel. Sweet 'n' Sour Inc. try to help Hero win, but Bobby Dempsey accidentally costs Hero the match, which continues that storyline.

Overall: 8.0/10

Here we get the first solid show of 2008. The card overall was pretty consistent, without a single bad match on it. The two main events are the obvious reasons to get this, and the undercard isn't to shabby either. I'd get this if you have the chance.
