Random Match Reviews #6 (12/23/15)

I take look at several matches from NXT TV in 2015, featuring matches in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic, a stop in Brooklyn, and the debuts of some well-known independent wrestling stars!

1.) WWE NXT TV (8/26/15) - Eight-Man Tag - Enzo Amore, Colin Cassady, & The Hype Bros. (Mojo Rawley & Zack Ryder) vs. Chad Gable, Jason Jordan & The Mechanics (Scott Dawson & Dash Wilder): ***

This match comes to us from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. In addition to the actual NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn special, a number of matches were taped for the episode of NXT TV following the special. This is one of those matches, featuring four teams from the NXT Tag Team Division. As you would expect, Enzo Amore & Big Cass come out to a MONSTER reaction on their home turf!! The match itself was pretty entertaining, and the crowd being on fire made it even more enjoyable. Solid stuff throughout this one. The babyface team of Enzo, Big Cass, & The Hype Bros would end up getting the win.

2.) WWE NXT TV (9/2/15) - Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic - First Round - Chad Gable & Jason Jordan vs. Neville & Solomon Crowe: ***

I'll be reviewing a number of matches from NXT TV that were part of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic, and this is the first of those. Solomon Crowe (aka Sami Callihan) needed a parter, and he found a good one in the form of former NXT Champion Neville. Here, they're taking on the relatively new team of Chad Gable & Jason Jordan. This was a pretty solid tag team match. Nothing really amazing here, but good work from both teams here. Despite being a new pairing, Gable & Jordan are quickly rising in popularity, and for good reason. They've really developed into a good tag team (and we'll see that more in the coming months). Here, they pick up a big win over Crowe & Neville to advance to the next round of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.

3.) WWE NXT TV (9/9/15) - Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic - First Round - NXT Champion Finn Balor & Samoa Joe vs. The Lucha Dragons (Kalisto & Sin Cara): ***1/2

Here we have a special first round match in the aforementioned Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. This match was actually taped at a Smackdown/Main Event TV Taping a few weeks prior. It features the current NXT Champion Finn Balor teaming with Samoa Joe to take on former NXT Tag Team Champions The Lucha Dragons. This is probably the best match out of the first round. Balor & Samoa Joe is a very unique pairing, and it was cool seeing them team up in a larger setting like this. They had a really good match with The Lucha Dragons here. Lots of really solid action, as you would expect. Kalisto & Sin Cara put forth a good effort, but in the end, Balor & Samoa Joe would get the win to advance to the next round of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.

4.) WWE NXT TV (9/16/15) - Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic - Second Round - Baron Corbin & Rhyno vs. Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa: ***

Up next we have a 2nd Round Match in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic, featuring a team of former rivals in Baron Corbin & Rhyno taking on the fascinating team of Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa. Of course, these men are well-known for their long stints on the independent scene, wrestling in pretty much any independent promotion you can think of. While they're still working on the independents, they're making a splash in NXT. Their first match saw them defeat the makeshift team of Tyler Breeze & Bull Dempsey, and now they have a shot in the Second Round. A solid match between these two teams. Not as good as the previous tournament matches I've looked at, but it wasn't bad by any means. Gargano & Ciampa put forth another good showing, but it wasn't enough to overcome Corbin & Rhyno, would pick up the win and advance to the Semi-Finals of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.

5.) WWE NXT TV (9/30/15) - Apollo Crews vs. Johnny Gargano: **3/4

After their participation in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic, Gargano & Ciampa received some opportunities in singles competition. The first of those sees Apollo Crews, the former Uhaa Nation, taking on Johnny Gargano. These two have faced off on a few occasions (I believe they were the Main Event of an Evolve show), though this meeting was particularly short. It only went four or five minutes, but they still managed to put together a solid match. Crews would get the victory here, building momentum towards NXT TakeOver: Respect.

6.) WWE NXT TV (9/30/15) - Tyler Breeze vs. Tommaso Ciampa: ***1/4

Tyler Breeze is taking on Apollo Crews at NXT TakeOver: Respect, and interesting enough, on the same episode as the previous match I looked at, Breeze is taking on the other independent standout in Tommaso Ciampa. This match ended up getting more time than Crews/Gargano, and subsequently, it was a better match. Solid stuff from both guys in this one. I have to say that it's really cool seeing guys like Gargano & Ciampa getting a big opportunity in NXT. Despite another solid showing, Ciampa would eventually fall to Tyler Breeze, who picks up the win with The Unprettier.

That concludes the 6th edition of my Random Match Reviews! I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas & a Happy Holidays!
